challenging terrain and obstacles.

Prerequisite: Dirt 101 or equivalent training and experience.

Each year we offer classes in April, May, June, break for July and August and then fall classes are offered in Sept and Oct. Please see below for remaining 2024 classes.

Dirt 101 caters to beginner and intermediate skill levels. Mentoring programs and ride buddies are among the many benefits to coming out and getting on the trails to train with us for a Dirt 101 class. We cover the adventure experience from start to finish with riding skills and all the proper gear and bike accessory information, taught from several different perspectives from experienced rider coaches.

Dirt 102 builds on your existing skills to help you safely and confidently tackle more challenging terrain and situations.

Remember, before signing up and committing to a class or event, is the date good for you? When is your anniversary? Haaaa no kidding.. any graduations? somebody’s wedding? other important dates? Let them know now that you are booked up. We can write reference letters if that helps. This is very important life saving safety training and mental health therapy. We had a couple celebrate their anniversary with us…. We are here for you and want to keep you out of trouble. It will create a better atmosphere for all motokind 🙂

Rentals: Our classes require the rider to have their own tagged and insured machine and motorcycle license. We do not offer rentals at this time although a few riders have rented directly from motorcycle owners using either Twisted Road or Riders Share.

Dirt 101 is a comprehensive two-day course designed for beginner to intermediate riders who want to learn how to prepare for and navigate off-road terrain on adventure or dual-sport motorcycles.

The program is designed for a person with some motorcycle riding experience, whether it be street riding or dirt bike riding when they were young, who wants to see “what’s out there” after the pavement ends.

For many of our students, this course is their first time off road. Others have some experience in the dirt, but want to enhance their skills for future adventures.

Please note that riders are required to bring their own motorcycle.

  • Learn essential off-road riding techniques from experienced PBAC instructors.
  • Understand and avoid the most common mistakes riders make.
  • Receive guidance on executing drills correctly and effectively. Small adjustments go a long way during skill development.
  • Enjoy a safe and engaging learning experience tailored to your needs.

During the Dirt 101 course you will learn to effectively apply your knowledge in the following skill areas:

  • Control and lever adjustments for off-highway riding.
  • Proper body position for different conditions.
  • Maintaining balance on an adventure motorcycle
  • Weight-shifting techniques
  • Throttle control techniques
  • Clutch control techniques
  • Front and rear brake application in various riding situations
  • Slow speed maneuvering
  • Tight turning techniques and counterbalancing
  • Riding on various surfaces: dirt, gravel, sand, mud

All of these skills will not only prepare you for practically any unexpected terrain but will also dramatically improve your street riding! Pine Barrens Adventure Camp Dirt 101 Course caters to all ability levels to make sure everyone is entertained. Riders on any street legal dual-sport motorcycle are welcome to take part!

Machine Ergonomics start with adjusting the controls: brake and clutch levers, shifter position, rear brake height and handle bars. Mirrors, turn signals, shields, after market lights and accessories. We have tools, but please bring a tool kit with the appropriate tools for your bike. You never know when you’ll need them.
Another important subject for off road riding are the Tires. We go over recommended tire types and pressures. Then help you adjust your tires to the correct pressure.
Once the bikes are ready we discuss body position, machine balance, and general off road riding techniques.

Basic Field Drills teach you how to control your machine on dirt. We begin with the proper use of the clutch and throttle with proper hand and finger placement. Then we move onto slow riding and smooth usage of your controls. We cover front and rear brake control in normal and panic situations. Turning techniques, line selection and learning to steer with your foot peg drills get you ready for the sand and loose soil.

We start the Sand training with a review of basic balance, body position and techniques to get you through deep sand in a safe basic step by step process until you build the confidence to move through it with more momentum at your own pace. Throttle control and line selection are also blended into the lesson at the appropriate place. You will later apply these skills on a ride through the forest in real world situations.

Field drills continue with a sample adventure riding loop or section.  We highlight challenging sections and discuss line selection, proper throttle and gear selection, as well as body position. Real time feed back from the instructors helps improve your off road skills.

Dirt 102 is a comprehensive two-day course designed for riders who have taken the Dirt 101 class along with some time to practice various skills on their own. Prerequisites are off road experience assessed by our trainers or having attended a Dirt 101 class here at PBAC or an equivalent class at another qualified training facility.

  • Experienced PBAC instructors will safely guide you through a progressive program to handle more difficult obstacles, terrain and situations.
  • This course reviews bike setup and adjustments and basic skills.
  • We add discussion of basic survival skills and local ecology with rare plants and animals.

This course expands basic techniques on how to ride a dual sport or adventure motorcycle in the sand, gravel and other local terrain. We can accommodate intermediate to advanced skill levels in this class and will adjust accordingly as we go. Your own motorcycle and motorcycle license and appropriate gear is also required.
